Write Every Day - February 26

[sanguinity]

Started outlining at lunch where-I-am-and-where-I'm-going. Didn't get far in the time I had available, but the exercise did make more concrete where each of the characters are right now -- something I was surprisingly sketchy on, despite having written the scenes that brought them here. I hope to have more time to work on this after dinner, but we'll see how it goes.

I came up with a really cool wordplay that will tie several plot threads together into a much prettier bow when I deploy it

26th: 170 on my main story and didn’t quite have the energy for where I was at there, so I started something new and wrote another 328 words.

Nice! I switch stories like that, too, when I need a break from the current one.

February 26: Not super inspired to write but not willing to take yet another day off so I flipped open the notebook to type some stuff up... and discovered there is a LOT more untyped than I thought, so I guess a few evenings of typing are in my future. Spent about an hour at it today.

It was a problem-solving day for me, too. I wrote a screenplay about a year and a half ago that, due to current events, an important part of the main plot doesn't make sense any more (not the pandemic - long story short it's a women's soccer movie that's set in LA and the new LA NWSL team is great for me personally but not great for the script, haha). I jotted down a list of possible ways I can fix the problem - not sure yet if any of them would work, but I'm going to keep thinking about it.

It sounds like you're making at least some progress. Go you!
I'm currently trying something different in my general writing approach in view of my goal of finishing and posting all those poor WIPs I have lying around eventually, which means forcing myself to continue writing at one chapter at a time until it is finished, no matter how hard the difficult parts will prove to be. Until now, just write "anything" had been more important, but that's become so natural by now and isn't bringing me onward in my writing any longer I need to change tactics.
I started this several days ago resulting in a finished and posted chapter (yay!), and spent yesterday sorting through the notes I have for the continuation of this story to let it grow in the background, while also starting to work at the current chapter of my major drawer WIP. (I'm writing this just for myself, but there's no reason this shouldn't be just a completely worked-through story as any meant for publishing, should it?) That chapter work went like the one before, mainly rewriting what I already had to fit my current narration style, and sorting a few scenes, but it also produced 213 new words. Quite the satisfying writing day, even if I didn't produce much.

That's a very productive day, never mind your net word count. (Net word count only means anything when you're writing your first draft, anyhow.)

I tend to let my WIPs sit around for maybe even years, and then come back to them with a "I've learned stuff since then" mindset, and find that I often have learned enough to be able to advance and even finish them. I hope this exercise turns out similarly successful for you!

I'm glad to hear you're making progress, even if it's the kind that creates more questions than answers. Ah, process, how we love and loathe you in equal measure! Lol!

I rewrote a lot of the H50 fic yesterday, losing rather than gaining words, and still really don't like it, so I'm scrapping it. I don't think I've done that on a fanfic in more than a decade. I mean, it's finished at 720 words, but I won't be posting it. It just doesn't hang together.

I'm going to take another run at the prompt instead and see if that garners me anything. If not, I may abandon that prompt temporarily in favor of a different one.

In general, I've been moody and restless this past week, so I'm sure that has something to do with it all.

I am VERY much in the love-and-loathe place right now. Today's writing didn't go as well as I would have liked, although I do think it was at least marginally productive. Ah, well! Sometimes the words make you work for them.

Oh, boo! Scrapping a fic can be so disappointing, I'm sorry. I wish you better luck on your next run at the prompt.

And yeah, "moody and restless" can absolutely affect how productive a writing session feels. My usual solution is to work through it anyway -- writing has a tendency to stabilize my mood, most times, even the crappy writing days. I hope you find something that works for you.

Feb 27: I wrote a lot of prompts for an exchange letter! I am not yet done but the rest are for tomorrow.
