[sticky entry] Sticky: Welcome to Write Every Day!

Welcome fellow writers! I'm [personal profile] ofmonstrouswords and I'm hosting the Write Every Day Challenge (WED) for February 2021! I've copied most of this welcome post directly from [personal profile] zwei_hexen.

What is the Write Every Day challenge?

Write Every Day is just what its name says: We challenge each other to write every, single day. Our goal is to encourage one another and provide the accountability and/or motivation that some of us find very useful in keeping the words flowing.

Who can participate?

Everyone is welcome! We're an open-minded, nonjudgmental group of people who enjoy writing.

What do I have to do?

I'll post each day to start a running tally of participants. All you need to do is drop by the comments to let us know how you're doing. Please know that you are never obligated to check in. Also, if you'd like to comment on someone else's comment but aren't checking in for yourself, that's perfectly fine too. We're really easygoing 'round here, and conversation is absolutely encouraged.

Is there a word limit or quota?

Nope. Write as little as an "alibi" sentence (just what it sounds like--a sentence you write to say you've written, an alibi for the day, as it were) or as much as you'd like. All word counts are welcome!

Is there any restriction on the kind of writing I can do?

Absolutely not! Fanfiction, original fiction, screenplays, blog posts, meta, academic writing, morning pages, editing, letter-writing, nonsense poems: If you can write it, it counts!

Do I have to participate all the time?

No way! You can come and go at your pleasure.

How do I check in for a different day?

Please comment on the most recent post and let me know which day(s) you're checking in for.

New to WED? Got any questions?

Please don't hesitate to contact me at [personal profile] ofmonstrouswords via PM or comment here. I'm happy to help!

Why is this a community and not a profile?

Some folks create specific profiles to host Write Every Day, and I wanted to do something similar but signing into different profiles is a surefire way to make sure I never post on one of them. I created a community because it's easier for me to manage. Feel free to join the comm or just subscribe -- it's up to you!

How do I make sure not to miss a post?

If you're worried you'll miss writing update posts in your feed, you can track the appropriate tag! Every WED post will be tagged with write every day.

There are two reccing posts during the month. You can use either to recommend the works (fannish or original) you created or updated during the month, and/or to rec your favourite fannish places online. You can also rec works by others that you enjoyed! The entries are tagged with the fandoms & genres etc., and you are invited to also check the older entries for recs and interesting places. Look for the reccing posts in the latter half of the month!

Write Every Day -- February Wrap and March Announcement

Announcement: [personal profile] cornerofmadness has had a medical emergency, so [personal profile] zwei_hexen will host us for the moment.

(Get well, [profile] corneofmadness! Thank you [personal profile] sylvanwitch and [personal profile] ysilme!)

It was lovely to see what you were all working on and cheer you all on this last week or so. Final tallies for the month are below the cut, and may March be a satisfying and productive month for everyone!

Write Every Day - February 28

Finished rewriting the one scene, and the next one, then wrote an entirely new scene, replacing the one I was stuck on. I'm only halfway through it, but hopefully I'm in a place where I can continue to move forward again.

How did your day go? Let me know, and I'll post our February final tally tomorrow! Remember, tomorrow's check-in will be over at [personal profile] cornerofmadness!

Write Every Day - February 27

Spent some time last night outlining what I previously wrote, decided that part of the reason I was having trouble continuing onward is that the scene coming into this one isn't solid enough, and so I spent today improving that scene. (Intermittently. In between vet appointments and exchange deadlines and other distractions.) Didn't get as far as I would have liked, but some elements are distinctly improved, and I can continue frogging and rewriting it tomorrow.

How about all of you?

Write Every Day - February 26

Started outlining at lunch where-I-am-and-where-I'm-going. Didn't get far in the time I had available, but the exercise did make more concrete where each of the characters are right now -- something I was surprisingly sketchy on, despite having written the scenes that brought them here. I hope to have more time to work on this after dinner, but we'll see how it goes.

How about all of you?

Write Every Day - February 25

[personal profile] cornerofmadness has graciously volunteered to host next month, thank you!

Today I wrote another two versions of the conversation I'm stuck on, and guess what? I'm still stuck. I diverged from my original outline a little way back, and I think that's the issue. Less the divergence itself -- this version is better than what I originally wrote, no question -- but I never really had a specific plan for getting from here to the rest of the stuff I had planned out. I think I'm gonna need to find a decent chunk of time to suck on my pencil and roughly outline the path from here to there, because it looks like blindly trying to write my way through in stolen ten/twenty minutes here and there isn't gonna work.

How did your writing go today?

My check-in: A few paragraphs at lunch. Not really sure how to navigate this transition point in the story, but I'll keep poking at it, and eventually I'll hit on something I like, I'm sure.

Write Every Day: February 23

Hello, everyone! I'm filling in for [personal profile] ofmonstrouswords. Speaking of hosting duties, I notice it's getting on toward the end of the month: anyone want to volunteer for March?

My check-in: between one thing and another, all my usual writing times today got co-opted by other demands (boo! hiss!), but I did get an alibi sentence-and-a-half in at lunch.

hey all. I appreciate the well-wishes.

said emergency is less emergent, but has affected my life in a lot of ways that are not ideal to running WED, so I've asked [personal profile] sanguinity to take over for the next couple of days; pending their acceptance, they'll be doing posts for the next few days. hopefully I'll be back soon.

I might not be able to get to all the comments from the past week, because of this. I'm going to try, but...if I don't get to replying to your comments, please know I am cheering you and your writing on regardless. <3

Write Every Day: February 20

holy catfish what a week

I'm so glad I made the decision to put a bunch of posts up early. work was BRUTAL this week -- Tuesday was okay but I was at work late trying to get everything finished up, and then Wednesday was possibly the busiest day I've ever had or ever WILL have in Records. Thursday and Friday were about a thousand times better, but I was still recovering from the first two days so I was still 100% exhausted.

slept until 1630 today and I feel much better.

I haven't updated the tallies or replied to comments yet on the past few days of posts -- I haven't even been on Dreamwidth til now! -- but I wanted to get this up sooner rather than later for y'all to check in. my goal is to finish tallies and comment-replying by tomorrow.

also, today is the first reccing post of the month!

probably should have done it on one of the earlier posts this week but see above. ;D

from the intro post:

You can use either to recommend the works (fannish or original) you created or updated during the month, and/or to rec your favourite fannish places online. You can also rec works by others that you enjoyed!

so go ahead and recc whatever you want to recc!

and now for something completely different

I work night shift for the next 4 days, so in the interest of there actually being a post every day (which will make my little Type-A heart happy when I look at the calendar for this community and see every day is clickable), I'm going to post a really basic check-in post for each day ahead of time. (really basic = all past days tallies up to the 15th, after the 15th might not be fully updated until end of the week; no extra little bit from me.)

I'll date them for the actual day, but they'll show up in your reading pages and inbox a bit early. I'll update the posts with tallies either when I get home from work or before I leave.

(my work hours are 1500 -- 2300 Pacific Time.)

check in on any day you wish for as many days as you wish, and as always please let me know if I missed adding you to a day!

how did your writing go today?

happy valentine's day!

earlier my furry valentine was playing with his squeaky toy so much i couldn't hear myself think, but thankfully he's gone outside to play with my other furry valentine. (in addition to the puppy, Sirius the Dog Star Li, we have Lord Tyee the almost-12-year-old wolf shepherd, who is now best pals with Sirius and consequently has had several years shaved off.)

Valentine's Day has a weird place in my life as it's exactly six months from my birthday (August 14th), and my mom always made a big deal of my half-birthday every year. it wasn't until i was a bit older that i realized -- very few people do this, and even fewer understand what the hell i'm talking about when i say "half-birthday".

in college, i became friends with a guy i called Faramir because he looked a lot like Faramir in the LOTR movies that had come out in the years beforehand, and he was as decent and good a man as book-Faramir. he was my "half-birthday buddy" because today was his birthday, making his half-birthday my birthday. he thought it was all very weird, but he never shamed me for it, and just embraced my particular weirdness.

(he was weird in his own particular ways, too, after all; i'll never forget his birthday dinner at Pizza Hut where he decided to make a "pizza salad sandwich" by putting his salad between two slices of pizza and eating it like a sandwich. as he did it, he said "pizza sandwich!" in a strange, high-pitched, Muppet-reminiscient voice that set us all to laughing hysterically.)

today, as last year, i'm saying happy birthday to him in whatever the next plane of existence is, because sadly he left us a few years ago -- and truly, a light has gone out in the world, because he was one of the best people I have ever known.

so, happy birthday Scott. thank you for renewing my faith in humanity when I sorely needed it. you are truly missed.

now that i've made you all sad....

how's your writing going today? are you participating in any Valentine's themed challenges?

if you haven't seen it, there is a Valentine's Bingo Fest in [community profile] allbingo right now. you can choose a card, request a card, or make your own! (i made my own; you can see it here.)

happy lupercalia!

February 13th to the 15th is Lupercalia, an ancient Roman -- actually possibly pre-Roman -- festival of purification. celebrating it today in the ways the Romans did (sacrificing a goat, running naked and bloody through the streets) would probably be frowned upon and likely have unwanted results, so I don't recommend it. however, any modern purification ritual would definitely be in the spirit of the holiday!

(or maybe playing Goat Simulator.)

personally I'll probably stick with a simple shower and perhaps some free-writing. it's snowing again, so no running naked through the streets for me.

how is your writing going today?

man, what happened to today? oddly, not my sleep schedule; i was up at 0700 today after going to bed at a respectable 0200. but then when my surprise work shift got cancelled i decided to bow to the inevitability of exhaustion and went back to bed for a nap around noon. woke up at around 1530 feeling quite refreshed.

and then...i'm not really sure what else happened except now it's 2246 and i'm going OH CRAP I HAVEN'T POSTED FOR WRITE EVERY DAY.

i wish i could say this never happens to me but this seems to be my life, so. c'est la vie. or, as i thought it was spelled when i was a kid: sailor V!

being able to schedule posts better on Dreamwidth would probably help...as it is, I'll post the 13th's check-in post before bed tonight so it's up earlier for y'all. of course, some have already checked in for the 12th (a-okay! if i've not posted, please check-in on the most recent post and i'll be sure to get your name on the tally), so if you want to check in for the 13th (or 14th for some of you) go right ahead!

also let me know if i've missed you on one of the days in this post...pretty sure i got everyone, but my brain is not to be trusted!

(i haven't finished updating past posts yet; going to catch up on that this weekend. this post should be fully up to date though.)

just a short post from me today; my sleep schedule is STILL all over the place. haven't yet been successful in righting it. I think the problem is late night is kind of "my time" -- always has been -- and so I find myself doing all the things I really wanted to do during the day at night. which leads to 7am bedtimes. and I'm not in high school anymore so I can't physically handle the all-nighter to right my schedule, so it's much harder to fix.

so, no writing yet; will hopefully get some words before bed (which will hopefully be earlier than 7am on the 12th, haha). as well as replying to comments -- just wanted to get this up before it got too late.

how about you? how is your writing going today?

happy snow day!

well, it is for us up here -- mom went out and got a bunch of groceries because we're anticipating not being able to go anywhere for the next couple of days. surprise! say the gods of weather.

my puppy is no longer scared of snow, and has been playing happily in it today -- though he needs to come in often to warm up, as his little paws get cold. (i say "little"; he's not even 6 months and over 50 pounds so those paws are actually gigantic.)

my writing has gone well the past 2 days! i managed just under 400 yesterday and just over 600 today on that short story that's becoming longer as time goes on. that's okay; i'm really writing it as a sort of world-building exercise -- i find i discover more about the world i'm building when i write little things set in it.

tomorrow is the new moon so tonight is when i try to set intentions for the next month (well, next moon cycle). my intentions, i think, will be writing-related:

  • finish outline for Big Project
  • finish editing that blasted book
  • finish A Story (any story, doesn't matter which one)

i think that's all doable within the next 28-ish days. :)

how did your writing go today (or tomorrow, if you're in the future from me)?
